So I again went to meet my dermatologist friend and we ended up talking a lot on the do’s and dont’s in skin care. So here a few things that the skin doctors want you to stop doing!

Skin doctors-want-us-to-stop

I really love talking on skin and hair and gaining as much knowledge as I can. I have not blocked myself from knowing the various dermatological (medicated) products available in the market, in fact I do believe in them. I just don’t believe in drugstore brands! So only natural and a few medicated brands are what comprises of my skin care routine. My hair care routine is 100% natural 🙂

On my discussion with her while she was breaking one nasty pimple of my face :/ she shared a lot of points which were important.

Things Skin Doctors Want You to Stop Doing

  1. She mentioned that many people are now reporting to her with issues of adult acne. Now there could be many reasons but most common from her experience were 1. Trying different products each time 2. Consuming a lot of milk and/or milk products. Many a times we do not realize that food products might be causing hormonal changes in us and milk is capable of doing that! So if you do have a lot of acne, try stopping milk for sometime and see if that is the reason for you. Also, stick to a few but good and well suited products for your skin. Experimenting sometimes is fine but frequent experimenting can create a havoc on your skin.
  2. Eating junk food is no no! We don’t realize the amount of harm caused by eating roadside or junk food, let alone the packaged food. Yes it is tempting and sometimes really difficult to avoid, but lets take efforts to make it minimum.
  3. Skipping sunscreen is a SIN! She said that 90% of women aged around 40 come to her with dark patches or pigmentation issues. Almost ALL of them had skipped sunscreen earlier. There is NO chance you can save yourself from the damages of the sun. In fact sunscreen must be applied thrice a day! (I have at least started applying twice a day now)
  4. Habitual drinking, smoking, drugs, tobacco consumption etc they all kill your skin cells and make you age faster, says many skin doctors. Now, I asked her specifically about drinking once a week (Since I do enjoy my beer and wine!) so she said while it is bad, ensure you have 3 glasses of water if you have 1 glass of wine; and stick to this ratio throughout. Smoking has no exception!
  5. Not using face masks! She totally believes in homemade DIY’s (that’s where I get confidence for my DIY’s from! :)) So don’t stop concocting the amazing recipes, but just ensure they suit you well.
  6. Many people do not understand their skin, and just keep trying products based on reviews, or others recommendation. It’s time you stop that. If I suggest something, that is my experience; but you must understand your skin, skin type, what things are you allergic to and then take a call to avoid further complications. Many products will not work for you if they are not meant for your skin type.
  7. Skin Doctors also say, that a deep cleanse for your skin is necessary every 15 days. Now this could be dermatology clean ups or home clean ups but you must do a proper clean up every 15 days.
  8. DO NOT use spot treatments like toothpaste on your acne. It is the worst thing you can do, to your already irritated skin. Benzoyl Peroxide (on prescription) or a drop of tea tree oil mixed with a drop of almond oil is a good idea 🙂

Ok so these were a few tips that came out from a tete-a-tete with my dermatologist. Skin doctors throughout also read blogs and sometimes they are even tensed at what we write and suggest! Hence I keep visiting her to ensure I am on the right path, coz if I am on the right path; then only can I guide you all 🙂

P.S My secret wish is - I wish I was a dermatologist! I could really go back in time, take science and study hard! I just wish I knew it back then :-/ What’s your’s?

Lots of love,

Vidhi xoxoxo
