Winter is coming! Well, it sure is and what better than our damaged skin to confirm it. No matter how passionately we adore our gorgeous winter clothes and accessories, we simply can’t love the fact that our scalp is getting flaky, our hands cracked and our face all dry and irritated.

When you notice your skin going dry it’s due to the air that, in winter, pulls moisture away from skin, tightens your skin cells and weakens your protective barrier.
To avoid any additional discomfort and/or heal the damage that’s already been made, we’re listing a few great advice that may help undo the problem:
Treat Your Damaged Winter Skin:
AVOID DAMAGE CONTROL
If possible, escape fixing the problem by never allowing it to become a problem in the first place. If your skin has not already started to dry and break, it would be best to do some preventive nurturing. Use the sunscreen daily, especially when you are out; believe it or not but the winters also reflect about 80% of the sunlight on your skin.
SOLVE DERMATOLOGICAL PROBLEMS

In case your skin got damaged during summer, winter is the right time to treat these problems dermatologically. Cases of hyperpigmentation are not uncommon, especially not after the summer and they’re not dangerous; still, they’re not a pleasant thing to experience. Winter is the perfect time to solve these and other dermatological problems, as the exposure to sunlight is lessened.
PROTECT THE LIPS AND FACE
With the harsh weather out there, it’s inevitable for the skin and lips to suffer breakage and irritation. To try and prevent this from happening, make sure you’ve always got a chap stick near and apply it regularly, especially when you are going out.
As for face creams, make sure they’re rich with moisture; the greasier the better. Apply it several times a day, i.e. whenever you are leaving the house and your skin will be exposed to cold.
CARE FOR YOUR HANDS

Our skin is the thinnest on the hands which is why it is prone to (easy) breakage. Protect the hands by using moisturizing hand creams regularly and wearing gloves when you are going out. However, make sure you avoid wool and less breathable synthetic fabrics like nylon as they’ll only cause further irritation.
DRINK A LOT OF FLUIDS

The advice old as day, but fantastically powerful – hydrating! This is one of those advice that should be adopted and practiced throughout the whole year, regardless of season. The more water you drink the healthier you’ll be – overall and skin wise. Try drinking about 2l-4l of water a day and you’ll see a significant change in your skin health as well as your health in general.
STAY AWAY FROM HOT SHOWERS
Sure, it’s cold out and you want something to warm you up, and that’s perfectly fine – as long as you are staying in for the day/night. However, when you are going out straight after taking a shower, make sure that the water isn’t as hot. Or, shower with hot water and then slowly transit to colder as you get closer to the end of the shower. That way you are preparing the skin for leaving the hot, and entering the cold and not exposing it to a climate shock.
It’s also advisable to take shorter showers, as long showers tend to strip the skin off its natural, protective oils.
Good luck and make sure you’re smart about your winter skin regimens!
